Vitamin D – The Sunshine Vitamin

We are now offering Vitamin D injections at the clinic! This painless and quick intramuscular injection is offered once per week for patients who are Vitamin D deficient. In just a few weeks, levels quickly go up into optimal range for most patients. If you spend most of your time indoors, eat very little fish or dairy or live at a latitude above 37 degrees north (like here in North Vancouver!), you are more likely to have a vitamin D deficiency. You may be deficient without realizing it as low vitamin D symptoms are often subtle and go unnoticed. Statistics Canada estimates that approximately 1/3 of Canadians are Vitamin D deficient. Here at the Clinic, we tend to see a much larger percentage of patients who are deficient. This could possibly be due to our cold dark climate here on the West Coast or could be due to the fact that we are testing levels more often in patients who have symptoms, thus catching more of the population at risk. Do you know your levels?

Common low vitamin D Symptoms that we see at the Clinic:

  • Low immunity and getting sick often
  • Depression
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Low bone mineral density

There is a link between vitamin D levels and overall health. Some of the most common conditions associated with low Vitamin D levels:

  • Infertility
  • Depression
  • Asthma
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Autoimmune disease such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s

So how much Vitamin D do we really need to get the maximal benefit? Evidence to date points to optimal levels resting above what most doctors recommend. While there aren’t results from randomized studies (yet) to establish that level, many observational studies have pointed to relationships between vitamin D levels and our overall health. Our Restoration ND’s typically look for optimal 25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels to sit somewhere around 100 nmol/L.
