It’s a gentle, strategic massage over the abdomen, pelvis, low back and sacrum that comes from an ancient lineage of Belizean midwives and healers. The massage boosts blood and lymph circulation and supports nerve health to eliminate congestion in the pelvis and abdomen and support proper uterine position. Pelvic congestion is caused by blocked blood and lymph flow. The pelvis has a complex network of veins that tend to dilate leading to blood stasis instead of blood flow. This venous congestion can lead to a larger uterus, pelvic pain, heaviness, and a heavier and more painful period. It can decrease blood supply to the ovaries limiting the ability to make estrogen and progesterone appropriately, causing irregular periods. Some of the factors that cause pelvic congestion include chronic constipation, tight low back, and sacral muscles and sitting for extensive periods of time.

Lymph flow can be affected by tight muscles, organ position, and tight clothing. When blood and lymph flow are restricted, tissues collect toxic waste and become acidic. In the uterus this can cause cramping and painful periods. At the nerve roots, it can interfere with healthy nerve activity, affecting digestive and reproductive organ function. Muscle spasms, and scar tissue can also interfere with nerve conduction. MAT decompresses muscles around spinal nerves allowing for unimpeded nerve conduction to the underlying organs. Oftentimes the uterus is out of alignment as well, either tipped forwards, backward or leaning to one side. This can further affect the blood flow and function of the reproductive system and affect hormone regulation. Common symptoms of a displaced uterus include hemorrhoids, varicose veins in the legs, constipation, low backache, painful ovulation, irregular or painful periods, painful intercourse and difficulty conceiving. Maya Abdominal Therapy works to restore healthy circulation, ease muscle tension and relax tight connective tissue to relieve digestive and pelvic pain complaints and improve organ function.
